Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC)was established under a bilateral agreement between the governments of Thailand and Denmark after the 5th Thai-Danish Expedition in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand in 1966. The first bilateral agreement was signed by the governments of Thailand and Denmark on October 16th, 1968. This was followed by a 2nd agreement, and then a 3rd agreement which ended in 1983 with a reduced contribution from the Danish government. The latest 5-year cooperation between the two governments was issued for 1996-2000. The Center was transferred from the Department of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives to the Department of Marine Coastal Resources, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, in accordance with the Thai government agency reform of October 3rd, 2002. PMBC is located at the southeast tip of Phuket Island, at Panwa Cape, in Muang District, of Phuket Province. It covers an area of 8.4 hectares.

“สถาบันวิจัยและพัฒนาทรัพยากรทางทะเลชายฝั่งทะเล และป่าชายเลน” เดิมชื่อศูนย์ชีววิทยาทางทะเลภูเก็ต สังกัดกรมประมง กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ จัดตั้งขึ้นตามข้อตกลงความร่วมมือทางวิชาการสาขาชีววิทยาทางทะเล ระหว่างรัฐบาลแห่งราชอาณาจักรไทยและรัฐบาลแห่งราชอาณาจักรเดนมาร์ก เมื่อวันที่ 11 ตุลาคม 2511 มีพิธีเปิดอย่างเป็นทางการเมื่อ วันที่ 11 พฤษภาคม 2515 ปัจจุบันสังกัดกรมทรัพยากรทางทะเลและชายฝั่ง กระทรวงทรัพยากรธรรมชาติและสิ่งแวดล้อม สถาบันฯ ตั้งอยู่ทิศตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของเกาะภูเก็ต บริเวณแหลมพันวา ถ. อ่าวมะขาม–แหลมพันวา ต. วิชิต อ.เมือง จ. ภูเก็ต มีพื้นที่ประมาณ 52 ไร่
